One Page V Multi-Page : What should i have?

Rotary Creative Group Rotary Creative Group - 26 September 2018

There are two types of websites when we talk about pages, a one page site, or a multi page site.  But which you should have very much depends on your requirements, and what you are expecting from your website.

Benefits of a One Page Site

A One page site provides you the benefit of having all of your information in one place without the need to navigate to different places on the site.  This is good for UX and UI, because it is stated that your users should be able to get to the information that they are looking for in as few clicks as possible.

One page sites can be nicer on the eye, just because of the simplicity of them.  Also, if the main aim of your website is to get somebody to contact you, and you aren’t running an e-commerce business then a one page site is probably just what you need.

It is important to convey your message and get the main information you want people to get from your website in the first screen.  Although screens come in a variety of sizes and shapes, you can still effectively put across what you want your website to do for you as soon as the site loads. This is something that is beneficial for both types of websites, but more-so one page sites, where the information you are providing is thin.

So for example, if you want somebody to contact you, then this should be in the top section of your website, automatically scrolling them right down to the Contact Form without the need for them to manually scroll down the whole of your website, just to contact you.

A one page website suits a small company who’s sole aim is to get contact from their readership, but also startups and companies that simply just want to get their names out there.

Here at Rotary Creative Group, we have a range of successful one page websites.  Our most recent is the website for AJF Laboratories.  The aim of this website was to get people to contact the company as soon as possible, so having the contact button highlighted at the top allows users to do this quickly, without having to read the rest of the website.  However, other users may want to read about the company first, so having call to actions such as a ‘Learn More’ button or a ‘Continue’ button allows the user to do this without having to scroll anywhere themselves.  The more you can assist the user to get down to the bottom of your website smoothly, the more likely you are to get conversions from your website.

Benefits of a Multi page website

Multi page websites are very useful for larger companies who have a goal such as selling products, or want to give much more in-depth information to their user base.

An E-commerce website should nearly always be a multi page website, I can’t say that I have ever built or been on an e-commerce website that was a single page.  People want to know who they are buying from, and your experience in the industry if they are spending money on your website without speaking to you, so multiple pages allows them to find out this information easily.

Multi page websites may also suit corporate companies who have a much broader message to put across, or perhaps a selection of child companies – basically any company with a lot of information to present is much better of doing this over multiple pages.

Multiple pages can also have a benefit for SEO.  The more pages you have on your website hitting keywords, the better for your Google ranking. Although many other factors come to play in this too – this is one of them.

We have many successful multi page websites, but a great example of one of these is Continuum.  This site has a lot of information from the companies prospectus and it was for us to make this work.  A one page site wouldn’t have worked for them because they have so much information to share about the company.

We also have a range of other successful one page websites, which you can view on our website page.

When deciding to have a one page website or a multi page website  a good starting point is to think about what content you are going to have on the site.  A really long page full of information probably isn’t as good as separating it into pages.  However, a concise page with outlined sections makes for a great one page website.  Your requirements decide your internet destiny.
